Patriot: Where History Ends and Myth Begins

A time of war, a time of heavy repression and true heroism, which you realize only after the full story. The deadly flames of war encompasses a veteran, played flawlessly by Mel Gibson, but an experienced man left behind. There was a sense of insecurity towards the hero here, is he a coward? Why all volunteers, even less experienced guys go to war, and Gibson stayed away.

The hero, citing family and that he has seen a lot of death, will stay home. Everyone was surprised, we were given to understand that the population has turned against the family man. The ban passed on to the household, and attempts by the commissariat to take the sons away by force were also unsuccessful. That’s the perspective you’d expect: and what happens next? After all, it takes a very strong turning point to change Mel’s mind. And it comes, it comes like a hurricane that no one expects, it comes with the death of a loved one, destroying everything human that was in our seasoned veteran. Scenes of battles, small battles are not as attention-grabbing as Gibson’s acting, allowing his character to transfer all the pain, cruelty and persistence from the screen to the audience. As a man transforms from a peaceful citizen into a ruthless rebel squad leader, as military craft and tactics turned into a thirst for revenge, it seems as if nothing will stop Mel.

The movie is filled with very skillful fighting techniques and many deaths. Tactics and code dictate the established things of taking prisoners, caring for others, because soldiers are pawns in the hands of belligerent countries. But not in the case of the veteran, who is gnawing only revenge, the hero changes before our eyes, from the decent and kind man at the beginning of the picture is not left and trace, now in front of us is an executioner, fiercely dealing with enemies. For opponents he is death, for his country – a patriot.

Jason Isaacs, who likes to play negative heroes, is impressive. Severity and heartlessness winds from his image, and on the side of the enemy his character does incredible things. Heath Ledger milaha, such a refined young man and a nice person does not belong in the war, looking at the age of the actor (21 years old) during the filming of “Patriot”.

In the end, a picture about how grief can change a person beyond recognition, a war drama for fans of historical action movies.
